Fine and Unbiddable-La Rochelle.
La Rochelle, with a thousand years of history yet decidedly future-looking, is a lovely generous town, marrying the preservation of its natural and architectural heritage with sound development and harmonious innovation. It makes the most of its maritime location, which is the basis of its development in terms of economy, tourism and culture.
It is famous worldwide thanks to its old harbour guarded by its two towers, which date from the 14th and 15th centuries. They even survived Richelieu’s siege of La Rochelle. On either side of the harbour entrance, the tallest is Saint-Nicolas tower, then the Tower of La Chaîne, and a little further away, linked to the second tower by a wall is the Lanterne tower, used both for defence and as a lighthouse.
With over 200 hours of sunshine, La Rochelle is one of France’s most appealing and dynamic towns.
Le Vieux Port (Old Port)
The Vieux Port is the town’s historic harbour, and has become world-famous thanks to the two medieval towers guarding the entrance. La Rochelle gained much importance during the Hundred Years War, then with the discovery of America.
The fame of these towers- the remains of successive sieges of the town and its proud guardians- is such that they need no introduction; they bear witness to La Rochelle’s authority since the Middle Ages.
